Josh Windass is Guiding Wrexham into Playoff Contention
  • Josh Windass is thriving at Wrexham
  • English frontman in excellent goalscoring form
  • Could fire Reds to play-offs

Josh Windass continues to demonstrate his worth for Wrexham, as the summer signing has scored 15 goals this season, marking his best scoring tally in a single Championship campaign.

Windass joined Wrexham in July 2025 on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday, signing a three-year contract until the end of the 2027/28 season.

The attacking midfielder made 153 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, scoring 53 goals. He played a crucial role in the Owls’ promotion to the EFL Championship during the 2022/23 season, scoring the winning goal in the play-off final and being named in the EFL League One Team of the Season.

Wrexham’s Major Windass Coup

Windass was of interest to every Championship club at the end of the 2024/2025 season, as he was a free agent following his mutual agreement to leave his beloved Sheffield Wednesday due to the club’s financial issues.

The Englishman joined the North Wales side in the summer of 2025 as Phil Parkinson wanted more firepower up front coming into the Championship as a newly promoted side.

The move showed the league that Wrexham had the ambition to push for the playoffs before a ball was even kicked, with the signing of Windass.

Windass’s journey to Wrexham has been complicated after his release from Huddersfield Academy. He subsequently played for Accrington Stanley, Rangers, Wigan Athletic, and Sheffield Wednesday before joining the team in North Wales.

Windass Firing Wrexham Towards Play-Offs

The 32-year-old currently leads as the club’s top goalscorer in the league this season with 15 goals and five assists in 40 games. Proving his worth in the club’s playoff contention hopes.

Only four players have more goal contributions in the league this season than Windass, with the Englishman sitting on 20 in total, whilst Swansea City’s Zan Vipotnik leads the pack with 26 goal contributions.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said, “It’s not easy to get goals at this level, but he’s producing goals when it matters most, and that’s the sign of a top player.”

Windass has contributed 33 points in the Championship this season, thanks to his goal contributions in key games. One of his standout performances was against league winners Coventry City, where he provided a hat-trick of assists, leading Wrexham to a victory and handing Frank Lampard his first defeat of the campaign back in October of last year.

A crucial away goal for Windass at Oxford United last week helped Wrexham climb into the top six, while Hull dropped points against already relegated Leicester City.

With one game left in the season, Windass hopes to make an impact and produce another special moment, as he did for Sheffield Wednesday in the playoff final, to help solidify Wrexham’s position in the top six.
