Wrexham secured a 1-0 win over Oxford United in the Championship as Josh Windass’ stunning strike earned all three points and lifted the hosts into the play-off position.
Windass continued his fine form against Oxford United as he scored his 15th goal of the season to secure all three points.
The result places Wrexham in sixth position in the Championship, aided by Leicester’s draw with Hull City.
Oxford United were the first to threaten the net in the opening five minutes as Will Lankshear’s header from the centre of the box was comfortably saved by Danny Ward.
Wrexham’s first major opportunity in the game came in the 14th minute when George Thomson delivered an excellent cross to Sam Smith, who ultimately struck the ball wide of the post from close range.
At the half-hour mark, Wrexham broke forward, with Smith evading two defenders to assist Windass, but he shot wide of the post.
After knocking on the door for much of the first half, Wrexham finally took the lead with a spectacular strike from an in-form Windass, who fired his first-time shot from outside the box into the bottom corner.
With seconds before half-time, Callum Doyle nearly doubled Wrexham’s lead after George Dobson’s deep free kick fell for the defender, who could only direct his effort straight at Cumming’s.
After a small amount of added time, the referee blew his whistle for half-time as the Red Dragons went into the break with control against the hosts.
In the 51st minute, Cumming made a good save as Smith sprinted onto a long ball. Smith tried to round him, but Cumming stopped the ball at his feet.
The home side tested Ward on the hour mark after a corner from Cameron Brannagan found Michal Helik’s header, which was directed towards the top corner, forcing Ward into a good save.
Just a minute later, Hyam forced Cumming into making an outstanding save from a close-range header.
Wrexham came close once again in the 75th minute when Kieffer Moore worked his way into the box; his effort was unfortunately deflected as the ball went out for a corner.
After four additional minutes of stoppage time, the referee blew the whistle for full-time as Wrexham secured all three points.
